The Bluebird is a beautiful small bird found mostly in Northern and Southern America. Recently, the bluebird house has become more common across the country, and people are eager to build one.

Bluebird House – Introduction

A Bluebird house is becoming common due to the recommendation of the North American Bluebird Society. According to society’s recent understanding, the bluebird breed is in danger of extinction. Therefore, the society is always busy learning new methods to save the dying breed across the country. One of the methods they are sharing with bird lovers is a Bluebird House or Nestbox.

This nesting box primarily aims to attract the maximum number of bluebirds to save their young ones and eggs. Bluebirds are always looking for a cavity in trees to create a home. Despite all the efforts, our forests are reducing across the world. Thus, birds across the globe are being affected.

This situation results in the use of artificial nests for these birds. An ideal bluebird house must be a duplicate of its natural habitat. The entering hole of the nest box should be 1.5 inches. Further, if you want to keep an eye on the inside conditions of the next, keep the top half removable. It is obvious to mention that in the bluebird house, we must maintain and care regularly for the nest box.

Also, keep the nestbox in a higher place to protect it from animals. An excellent paint job outside the nest box will keep it attractive to the Bluebird.

Bluebird House – History and Origin

Although social media and the internet are creating awareness for this bird, the instinct of humans to save other species has a long history. For a long time, bluebirds have been known as the symbol of joy, happiness, and good health.

Also, these birds have the mythical importance of bringing joy and health. This rare combination of joy and pest control had the humans caring for bluebirds.

In the 1960s, Eastern Bluebirds faced their worst due to sudden climate changes. This climate change caused a record decrease in their population. Forests were being cut rapidly, and bluebirds lost their homes. Thus, to prevent the situation from worsening, a society was built in 1978 to protect North American bluebirds.

The whole society is based on volunteers and bird enthusiasts. Ever since the bluebird house campaign grew in the US, there has been a significant change in the bluebird population.

Now the major question that arises among our minds is the reason behind bluebird house plans. Other than our instinct to protect other breeds, there is also a financial aspect. Bluebirds are the best way to protect farms and crops. Farmers have been protecting bluebirds for a long time, and obviously, the best method was to build a bluebird house.

How to Build a Bluebird House

Tips for the Birdhouse

These tips and recommendations are as per suggestions of the North American Bluebird Society.

  • Build a birdhouse in the open areas. Select an area with a low ground cover.
  • Select a rural area, golf course, or parkway with minimal traffic. These places are best for installing a birdhouse. Also, make sure to have a predator guard near the nest.
  • While making the birdhouse, use the rough side of the wood to the outer side. This process helps the bird to feel comfortable while landing in the house. The rough side mimics the natural nest of the bird.
  • Install a footing area for the Bluebird a few inches under the entrance hole. To make the bluebirds comfortable, discourage sparrows and other birds near that area.
  • Bluebirds are naturally inclined to raise three breeds during a nesting season. So, make sure to remove the unwanted birds near the swing-open side of the birdhouse.
